Art Meets Conservation

Museum of Underwater Art

Where sculpture, reef ecology, and conservation intersect, creating living galleries beneath the ocean surface.

Art That Serves the Ocean

The Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) represents a unique intersection of artistic expression and marine conservation. Sculptures are carefully placed on degraded or sandy reef areas where they serve double duty: as works of art accessible to divers and snorkelers, and as artificial reef structures that coral polyps can colonize and grow upon.

Over time, the sculptures become living artworks - covered in coral, algae, and sponge, inhabited by fish and invertebrates. They transform from human-made objects into thriving reef ecosystems.

MOUA demonstrates that conservation doesn't have to be clinical - it can be beautiful, inspiring, and deeply human. Every dive to a MOUA installation is both an artistic and ecological experience.

How Underwater Art Supports Reef Restoration

Artificial Reef Structure

Sculptures provide hard substrate in areas of sandy bottom or damaged reef, giving coral polyps a surface to settle and grow where none previously existed.

Marine Habitat

As corals and invertebrates colonize the sculptures, they create habitat for fish and other marine life, effectively growing a new reef community from the art installation.

Conservation Awareness

Divers and snorkelers who experience MOUA installations become ambassadors for ocean conservation, increasing the human connection to reefs and funding for restoration.

Gallery

Each installation tells a story - of human creativity, ocean resilience, and the possibility of restoration. Browse our growing underwater gallery.

Plan Your Dive

MOUA installations are accessible by boat dive and, in some locations, by snorkeling. The best way to experience MOUA is through a guided dive with a local dive operator familiar with the installation locations.

Artist Partnerships

We welcome collaborations with artists, sculptors, and creative institutions interested in contributing to the MOUA collection. All installations must be designed for marine compatibility and ecological benefit.

Materials must be non-toxic, pH neutral in seawater, and structurally designed to provide coral attachment surfaces. We work with artists through the full design and installation process.
