The Land-Based Nursery
Located at 23801 Overseas Highway, Summerland Key, FL 33042, our land-based nursery is where the magic of micro-fragmentation happens at scale. Here, thousands of coral fragments from the Florida reef tract are carefully grown in controlled conditions before being transplanted back to the ocean.
The facility features custom-built flow-through saltwater systems that maintain optimal water temperature, salinity, and light levels. Our team monitors coral health daily, carefully tracking growth rates, bleaching events, and overall vitality.
Our facility currently houses over 50,000 coral fragments, and we are excited to share that construction of our newest greenhouse expansion is nearing completion — further growing our capacity for reef restoration in the Florida Keys.

From Fragment to Reef
Collection
Small samples are collected from healthy "donor" corals on the reef. These are transported to Summerland Farms under carefully controlled conditions.
Fragmentation
Coral samples are micro-fragmented into tiny pieces - sometimes just 1-2 polyps - using specialized diamond-blade saws. This triggers accelerated growth.
Nursery Growth
Fragments are mounted on tiles and placed in our flow-through saltwater tanks. Growth is monitored and documented, with fragments growing 25–40× the natural rate.
Reef Transplant
Once large enough, corals are transplanted back to reef sites in the Florida Keys by our dive teams, carefully selecting sites where they have the best chance of survival.
Expansion News!
We are excited to announce that construction of our newest greenhouse expansion at Summerland Farms is nearing completion! Our nursery currently supports over 50,000 corals, and the new greenhouse will further grow that capacity. We invite all our friends and supporters to celebrate this milestone for coral restoration in the Florida Keys.
